Loren Lettington

February 17, 1986 - March 27, 2022

Loren Lettington, 36, of Eddyville, died Sunday, March 27, 2022, at the University Of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. He was born February 17, 1986, in Oskaloosa, the son of Peggy and Richard Lettington Jr. In his youth and throughout school he was always on the go. In high school he was a four-year letter winner in wrestling. He was also involved in FFA and the Building and Trades Program at the school. The summer between his junior and senior year he worked at Vermeer in Pella. He also worked at Steel Clay Shooting Sports near Eddyville, Orscheln in Ottumwa, and he was Uncle Junior’s right-hand man. He graduated from Eddyville-Blakesburg High School with the class of 2005. Following graduation, he did construction for a short time. On July 10, 2010, he was united in marriage to Megan Miller at Grace Church in Pella. To this union the joys of Loren’s life were born, Briar and Hadley. Loren was a committed father and husband, he felt it was important for Megan to be home with their children. Loren’s children were the center of his world, he rarely missed their activities. Loren loved to work, he worked full time at Vermeer and then on the weekends he would work full time for Cedar Valley Mechanical doing repairs in manufacturing plants in the area. Part of his role at Vermeer was traveling the world to troubleshoot new equipment. It was while on a work trip to Neuenburg, Germany, in 2012, that Loren was injured and was no longer able to work. After a year-long journey of recovery he was able to return to his own home and due to the love and care of his family, nurses, and friends, was able to enjoy many things he did before he was injured. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and through the Serve Outdoors organization he was able to continue to participate in many hunting trips. A close family friend designed and built a fishing pole that allowed him to continue to enjoy time on the pond banks with his family and friends. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and especially enjoyed following the wrestling and football teams. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. The Lettington boys were always on the go, from building and running demolition derby cars, to going to the sprint car races in Knoxville and “kind-of” watching the races, to the yearly trips to the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournaments in Des Moines, they always made an adventure out of every outing. As an added element of the adventure, Loren always felt the need for a better vantage point, this typically led to him finding something to climb and then make it known how far off the ground he could get. Loren always enjoyed a good time. He hosted the annual Truax 4th of July party along with neighbor Tom Lee. He also enjoyed having family and friends out for fish fries. He spent many Sundays playing poker with his friends. Loren was a member of the Oskaloosa Baptist Church. Loren touched the lives of everyone he met; whether it was in his younger days terrorizing the halls of Eddyville-Blakesburg High School, those he met working his various jobs, or those who knew him after his accident. Loren was a true inspiration, he lived for those who loved him and fought until the end because of his loved ones. His legacy lives on because he was legen…wait for it…dary. His family includes his two children, Briar Lettington and Hadley Lettington of Oskaloosa and Eddyville; his parents, Peggy & Richard Lettington Jr. of Eddyville; his siblings, Richard (Meghan) Lettington III and Anthony (Ashley Davis) Lettington all of Eddyville, Dimitar Dimitrov and Maggie Dimitrova both of Kavarna, Bulgaria; nieces and nephews, Stryker Lettington, Harper Lettington, Cooper Davis, Lennon Lettington, Huxton Lettington, and Oliver Lettington; his maternal grandmother, Alta Dykstra of Oskaloosa; his paternal grandfather, Walter Jackson of Eddyville; best friend, Wade Bonnett of Bussey; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Richard Lettington Sr., and Arthur Dykstra Sr. and his grandmother, Helen Jackson. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 2, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. in the Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont High School Gymnasium in Eddyville with Pastors Jason Brooks and Tom Shipley officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery near Bussey. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Friday, April 1, 2022, after 10:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 3-7 Friday evening to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the family for Loren’s children.
