Letha M. Nielsen Oskaloosa. Letha M. Nielsen, 91, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, February 8, 2010, at Northern Mahaska Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born September 28, 1918, the daughter of Leland and Edna Awtry Stigers. She was united in marriage to Howard Leon Wymore and later divorced. She then married Kenneth Nielsen. She worked at the Continental Overall Factory for 12 years. She then went to work as a cook Tower Park and later Pleasant Park Nursing Homes, retiring from there in 1983. She was a member of the Lady Eagles, V.F.W. and American Legion Auxiliaries. She enjoyed sewing, bowling, collecting knick knacks on her walks. She especially enjoyed spending time with her close friend Homer Adams, until his death in 1989.
Her family includes a son and his wife, Leon “Clark” and Rena Wymore of Ft. Worth, Texas; 4 grandchildren: Sally Wymore, Sharon (& Sam) Bethune, Dean Schutjer, and David (& Lynn) Schutjer; 10 great grandchildren; and many great great grandchildren; 3 brothers: Melvin Stigers in Iowa, Glen (& Marilyn) Stigers of Rose Hill, and Dale (& Shirley) Stigers of Milan, Illinois; 4 sisters: Opal Kitzman of Oskaloosa, Laura (& Irving) Awtry of Davenport, Elsie Caves of Oskaloosa, and Naomi Roberts of Eddyville; and a half sister: Lucille (& Robert) Thompson of Beacon.
Letha was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter: Betty Schutjer; 2 brothers: Estil and Roy Stigers; and 3 sisters: Ethol Piper, Fern Roberts, and Merilyn Steele.
Funeral services fro Letha Nielsen will be held Friday, February 12, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Pastor Del Bittner officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Thursday morning after 10 a.m. and the family will be at the funeral chapel Thursday evening from 5—7 to greet friends and relatives. Clifford Haines Oskaloosa. Clifford Lee Haines, 73, of Oskaloosa, died Friday, February 5, 2010, at his home near Oskaloosa. He was born February 15, 1936, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Harriet Dingaman Haines. Early in life he worked construction. On August 1, 1953, he was united in marriage to Mildred Kanselaar at Oskaloosa. Clifford worked for Ideal Manufacturing for a time. Then he went to work for Ideal Ready Mix and drove truck for them for 37 years. He retired from Ideal three years ago. He enjoyed working on cars and motorcycles, riding motorcycles, and he was an Iowa Hawkeye fan. He loved car races and especially enjoyed sprint cars.
His family includes his wife of over 56 years, Mildred Haines of Oskaloosa; two sons: Jeff (& Sandra) Haines, and Terry Haines all of Oskaloosa; 5 grandchildren: Jason (& Jodi) Haines, Jamie (& Jamie) Aschenbrenner, Jeremy Haines, Amanda Haines, and Julia ; 7 great grandchildren; two sisters: Patty (& Richard) Fox of Oskaloosa, and Barbara Blackledge of Grinnell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Joe Haines and Lewaine Lisk; and a sister: Shirley Boyer.
Funeral services for Cliff Haines will be held Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. James Tewell Oskaloosa. James F. Tewell, 74, of Oskaloosa died Friday, February 05, 2010, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born October 17, 1935, in Princeton, Indiana, the son of Robert and Bessie Mae Griffith Tewell. He graduated from Princeton High School in Princeton, Indiana, with the class of 1953. On March 17, 1957, he was united in marriage to Janet Ransford, at Princeton, Indiana. He worked 35 years in oil fields all over the United States drilling for oil. The family moved to Oskaloosa in 1969, however, Jim continued to travel. In 1982 he took a job with the City of Oskaloosa, working for the Water Department. He retired from his position with the city in the early 2000’s. He enjoyed caring for his yard and his home, automobiles, and guns. Even though he did not know Spanish, he enjoyed listening to Spanish music, and watching Spanish movies. He delighted in spending time with his family, and will be fondly remembered by all of them as the best husband, father, and grandfather.
His family includes his wife of over 52 years, Janet Tewell of Oskaloosa; Four daughters: Debra Bonea, Julie Lewis, Stacy (& Everett) Montgomery, and Stephanie (& Troy) Kraber all of Oskaloosa; two sons: James Tewell of Oskaloosa, and Joe (& Angel) Tewell of Des Moines; 14 grandchildren: Michael Tewell, Brittany Pope, Jaime Tewell, Cage Tewell, Tiffany Tewell, Jack Lewis, Matt Lewis, Dustin Montgomery, Shane Montgomery, Christopher Montgomery, Marie Simon, James Simon, Dalton Kraber, and Cole Kraber; 5 great grandchildren; a sister: Neoma (& Tom) Lashbrook of Princeton, Indiana; a sister in law: Donna Robb of Midland, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Walter, William, and Joe Tewell; and a sister: Irene Tewell.

David Bruce, Sr. Oskaloosa. David Clarence Bruce, Sr., 63, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at his home in Oskaloosa. He was born February 11, 1946, at Plattsburgh, New York, the son of Clarence Phillip and Margaret Carrol Bruce. He graduated from the Plattsburg High School with the class of 1964. Following high school he entered United States Army where he earned the M14 Rifle Expert Badge, and specialized in engineering, heavy equipment, and maintenance; he was honorably discharged in 1971. Upon his discharge, he returned to New York and joined his family in the family business. Later, he drove semi for Dickey Transport. In 1983 he moved to Oskaloosa and began working for the City of Oskaloosa. For several years David was the superintendent of the North Wastewater Facility in Oskaloosa. He retired in May of 2008 after 25 years of service. He enjoyed watching NASCAR especially Rusty Wallace, traveling around the U.S., and tinkering in his garage. He delighted in spending time with his family, and had a genuine love of life. He was a member of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W.
His family includes his two sons: David C. (& Amber) Bruce, Jr. and their children: Bailey, Kirsten of Oskaloosa, and Phillip B. Bruce of Killeen, Texas and his children: Alyssa, Ashley, Ciara, and Isabelle; his mother: Margaret “Nan” Bruce of Plattsburgh, New York; a sister: Karen Brim of Bedford, Indiana; and a brother: Dennis “Bud” (& Pat) Bruce of Plattsburgh, New York.
David was preceded in death by his father, and two sisters: Donna Lindsey and Pat Fredrick.
Funeral services for David Bruce will be held Thursday, February 11, 2010, at 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery at Oskaloosa. With graveside military rites given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion, V.F.W. and D.A.V.. Visitation will begin Wednesday morning after 9 and the family will be at the funeral chapel Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 to greet friends and relatives. William Whiting Oskaloosa. William C. Whiting, 83, of Oskaloosa died Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at his home in Oskaloosa. He was born November 5, 1926, in Alba, Missouri, the son of George and Lily Whiting. Early in life he worked in coal mines in Missouri. He was united in marriage to Nadine Morris at Joplin, Missouri, and she died March 13, 1992. Bill lived in Des Moines most of his life and while there he worked at Broadlawns Medical Center and the Hotel Fort Des Moines, his primary responsibility at both places was to keep them looking nice and clean. He moved to Oskaloosa to be closer to his family in 2004. He enjoyed watching westerns on television, watching and listening to baseball games, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
His family includes his daughter and her husband: Deborah and Robert Yeager of Oskaloosa; his son: Carl Whiting of Oskaloosa; 3 grandchildren: Susan (& C.J.) Kruse, June (& Benjamin) Williams, and Robert (& Tereasa) Yeager; seven great grandchildren: Ty and Donavin Kruse, Warren, Jakobe, Grayce, and Ian Williams; and Madison Almon.
Besides his wife, Bill was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
As was his wish, his body has been cremated and no visitation is planned. There will be a private family memorial service held at a later date. The Bates Funeral Chapel, Oskaloosa, is assisting the Whiting family with arrangements.

Allen Lowry Oskaloosa. Allen Dale Lowry, 56, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, February 02, 2010, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born February 16, 1953, in Oskaloosa. Though starting life as an orphan, at the age of 12 his childhood prayers were answered when Carl and Wilda Collister took him into their home as their own. They gave him the blessing of family, and later in life Allen was further blessed with a wife and daughter, and in his final days he was surrounded by a loving family. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1971. Due to his Cerebral Palsy he worked for several sheltered workshops; starting out in Iowa City at Systems Unlimited and later at C.O.C. in Oskaloosa. In 1991 he was united in marriage to Betty Coyle in Iowa City. Allen enjoyed the out of doors, tending to his saltwater fish tanks, funny movies, and just being out and about. Early in life he attended the Wesleyan Church with his parents Carl and Wilda.
His family includes his wife, Betty Lowry of Oskaloosa; his daughter: Samantha Lowry of Oskaloosa; his mother: Wilda Collister of Rose Hill; 2 brothers: Mark (& Pam) Collister of Lacey and Dakota Durst of Rose Hill; 6 sisters: Nancy (& Dean) Swim of Eddyville, Louise (& Rockney) Englehoven, Janet Teggats, Christine Briggs, Audrey (& Vernon) Prothero , and Cheryl Duncan all of Oskaloosa; an uncle and aunt: Chuck and Pat Lowry of Oskaloosa; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father: Carl Collister.
A memorial service for Allen Lowry will be held Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Del Bittner officiating. As was his wish his body has been cremated. Burial of the cremated remains will be in the White Oak Cemetery at a later date. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Freeda Blom Pleasant Hill. Freeda Blom, 94, of Pleasant Hill and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, January 28, 2010, (on her great great granddaughter Sydney’s 5th birthday) at the Parkridge Nursing and Rehab Center in Pleasant Hill. She was born October 19, 1915, in Delta, the daughter of Alex and Dora Bruns Taylor. Freeda graduated from the Delta High School with the class of 1933, and furthered her education at Iowa State Teachers College and earned her teaching certificate. She taught rural school in Keokuk County for a few years. On April 24, 1938, she was united in marriage to Ernest Blom at Delta. Together they farmed in Keokuk County, and in 1941, moved to Mahaska County, where they continued to farm and raise their family. In 1979 Ernest and Freeda moved into Oskaloosa; however they continued to stay active on the farm for many years. Freeda also enjoyed working as a sales representative for Avon. Early on, she was a very active member of the Coal Creek Church; as the church piano player, teaching Sunday school, and directing the children’s choir. She was also a member of the Ideal neighborhood club. Later, Freeda transferred her church membership to the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa, where she was very active, serving as a Sunday school teacher, director of the children’s choir, played the piano for many years, Stephen’s Ministry, and U.M.W., and was once “queen of the Church Bazaar”. On June 18, 1987, Ernest died. Freeda continued to be active in retirement, especially with Chapter IO, P.E.O.; T.T.T.; Garfield Club; Oskaloosa Womens Club; Farm Bureau Women; Mahaska Hospital auxiliary, and superintendent of the ‘flower division’ at the Southern Iowa Fair. She was also active in the Democratic Party and had been an election day poll worker for many years. She tended to be the ‘taxi driver’ for many of her friends, and delighted in spending time with her family and sharing her creativity and food with everyone.
Her family includes a daughter, Phyllis Childers (Charles) Perdue of Des Moines; two sons: Rex (Lorraine) Blom and Lyle (Eileen) Blom, all of Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren: Dave (Barb) Childers, Debbie Garber, Mark (Pam) Blom, Michelle (Brent) Vande Wall, Mitch (Sara) Blom, Jack Blom, Jay (Michelle) Blom, and Janelle (Reg) Randau; 16 Great Grandchildren: Nicole (Brent) Potter, Heather Garber, Josh (Emily) Childers, Julie Childers, Ryan and Austin Blom, Lindsey, Nathan, and Katie Vande Wall, Cameron, Hanna and Emily Blom, Sandra and Aaron Blom, and Zac and Lexi Randau; and four great great grandchildren: Sydney and Ty Potter and Wyatt and Payton Baker.
Besides her husband, Freeda was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, Don Childers; a brother in infancy, John Raymond Taylor; and two sisters: Ruth Gibbons and Ruby Lippard.
Funeral services for Freeda Blom will be held Monday, February 1, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. in the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa with Reverends David Childers and Robert Dean officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Sunday after 11 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Sunday from 2 – 4 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Nancy Hershey Beacon. Nancy Lynn Hershey, 42, of Beacon, died Sunday, January 24, 2010, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, after a brief battle with lung cancer. She was born June 4, 1967, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Kenneth and Loretta Dunwoody Sellars. She attended school at the Oskaloosa High School in Oskaloosa. On March 2, 1986, she was united in marriage to Bryon Hershey at Eddyville, and later divorced. Nancy worked various places in Oskaloosa, including local nursing homes, Happy Chef, Wiggs, Tastee Treat, Mediacom, and lastly Wal-Mart. She left Wal-Mart to help her mother care for her ailing grandmother Dorothy Dunwoody. Serving as the mayor of Beacon, Iowa, and the good work she did for that community, was one of her greatest civic accomplishments. She was very musically gifted; she enjoyed playing many instruments and singing. She especially enjoyed singing to residents of care facilities. She was referred to as “Aunt Nanny” by her several nieces and nephews, and was very proud that she was everyone’s favorite aunt. She took pride in being a second mom to many children. She loved animals, target shooting, mushroom hunting and anything to do with Farmall tractors. She was a member of the N.R.A.. She was very proud when she won a trip to Los Angeles from the Lifetime Network to promote a calendar idea that she submitted.
Nancy\'s family includes, 2 sons: Ryan (& Katie Roose) Hershey and Michael Hershey both of Oskaloosa; a daughter: Tiffany Hershey (& Mike Rockwell) of Albia; life long friends: Bryon and Connie Hershey of Oskaloosa; fiancée: Jeff Van Der Veer of Arkansas; 1 expected granddaughter: Natalie Ann Lynn Hershey; her mother: Loretta (& Robert Rouze) Davis of Beacon; her father: Kenneth Sellars of Oskaloosa; her grandmother: Dorothy Dunwoody; 3 sisters: Rhonda (& Steve) Phillips of Williamsburg, Robin (& Joe Mayhew) Boger of Eddyville, and Dorothy (& Shawn) Garrison of Beacon; 2 brothers: Douglas (& Sarah) Sellars of Carlisle and Danny (& Lindsay) Davis in Missouri; a step sister: Margaret Davis of Tipton, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
Nancy was preceded in death by a grandfather: Pat Dunwoody; a step sister Carrie Fisher; a step father: Frank Davis; and 4 uncles.
Funeral services for Nancy Hershey will be held Wednesday at 1 pm in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be in the Bluff Creek Cemetery southwest of Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Tuesday after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel with the family present at the funeral chapel from 5 – 7 pm to greet friends and relatives. Bernice McMullen Oskaloosa. Bernice McMullen, 91, passed away January 24, 2010 at the Mahaska Hospital. She was born April 30, 1918 the daughter of Howard and Clara Garrett Moore near Oskaloosa. She was united in marriage to Homer McMullen on April 20, 1936 in Lancaster, Missouri. Together they farmed in the Givin area until Homer’s death in 1973. She then moved into Oskaloosa. She enjoyed quilting at her church, going on trips with friends an in her later years going out to eat with family and friends.
Bernice is survived by 6 children: Bob McMullen of Port Graham, Alaska, Wayne McMullen of Oskaloosa, Phyllis Todd of Las Vegas, Nevada, Betty Stewart of Oskaloosa, Gary McMullen of Delta and Terry McMullen of Eddyville; a sister: Thelma Davis of Oskaloosa and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, 2 brothers 2 sisters, a grandson and a granddaughter.
Graveside services for Bernice McMullen will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the Springfield Cemetery with Pastor Dwayne Poe officiating. Burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery. Visitation will be held in the Bates Funeral Chapel Tuesday after 11 a.m. with the family present from 6 – 8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives.

Jack Shipman Oskaloosa. Jack Shipman, 83, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born July 17, 1926, in Marion County, the son of Roy and Fern Gibson Shipman. Early in life he helped his neighbors with their farm work. When he turned 16 he began driving truck for his brother. After 3 years of working for his brother, he went to work making deliveries for the “Dime Delivery Company” in Oskaloosa. On February 12, 1949, Jack was united in marriage to Vivian Newton in Oskaloosa. Vivian died on December 23, 2000. He continued his transportation career by driving a taxi cab for the Oskaloosa Cab and later the Safeway Cab in Oskaloosa. He then went to work doing auto body repair. In 1960 he purchased Hale Transfer and Storage Company, a business he sold in 1969. Jack started Shipman Mobile Home Court with his family, a business he owned and operated until selling it and retiring in 1986. He was a member of Council Lodge #644 in Oskaloosa for over 50 years. He enjoyed all types of hunting, fishing and sports in general. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan. He took great pride in being active in little league in Oskaloosa, coaching his son’s team, and teaching the game of baseball to his grandson were a great joy to him.

Janice Fuller Oskaloosa. Janice K. Fuller, 57, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, January 19, 2010, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. She was born November 23, 1952, at Guttenburg, Iowa, the daughter of Otto James and Violet May Johnson Groth. She graduated from the Central Community High School with the class of 1971. On October 27, 1973, Janice was united in marriage to Joseph Jay Fuller at Manchester, Iowa. Janice worked as a school photographer for Life Touch, a position she enjoyed very much for the past 22 years. She was forced to retire due to ill health in the middle of 2009. She was a member of the Calvary Bible Church in Oskaloosa. Janice truly enjoyed spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband. Her greatest loves in life were the Lord and her family. .
Her family includes her husband of over 36 years, Joseph Fuller of Oskaloosa; her mother in law: Betty Fuller; a daughter and her husband: Chastity Lynn and Rock Miller of St. Peters, Missouri; two sons and their wives: Shawn Joseph and Jessica Fuller of Prairie City, and Shannon Jay and Melissa Fuller of Oskaloosa; 8 grandchildren: Myriah Miller, Alexis Fuller, Makenna Miller, Kylie Fuller, Mataya Miller, Clayton Fuller, Brayden Fuller, and Aliyah Fuller; 3 sisters: Karen (& Bob) Inglis of Ft. Anna BeDillon Montezuma. Anna BeDillon, 89, of Montezuma and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, January 17, 2010, at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Montezuma. She was born April 24, 1920, at Beacon, Iowa, the daughter of Abraham Addison and Bridget Catherine Quirk BeDillon. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1938. Following high school she moved to Washington D.C. and worked as a legal secretary for a short time. She returned to Iowa and lived in Mahaska County. She was a very talented artist. She was very proud of her numerous awards she earned at various art and craft shows, including the Southern Iowa Fair in Oskaloosa. Early in her life she was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa.
Her family includes her brother: John BeDillon of Montezuma; four nieces: Zoe Ann (& Tom) Williams of Muscatine, Linda (& Roger) Sneller of Jefferson City, Missouri, Mary Lou Petty of Bullard Texas, and Patricia “Pat” (& Richard) Silvers of Oskaloosa; also surviving are many great nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister in law: Dollie BeDillon.
As was her wish Anna has been cremated, and no visitation is planned. There will be a graveside memorial service in the Forest Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Nelson Pioneer Farm. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Melvin Howells Oskaloosa. Melvin D. Howells, 83, of Des Moines and formerly of Oskaloosa and University Park, passed away Saturday, January 16, 2010, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines due to complications from dementia. He was born October 21, 1926, at Albia, Iowa, the son of Howell and Bessie Wagner Howells. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1945. Immediately after high school Mel went to work for General Mills in Oskaloosa. The General Mills plant closed in 1950, and he went to work for his uncle Homer Wagner driving truck in the Ottumwa area. While working for Homer, Mel met the love of his life Gladys Parlet. After four years of dating Mel and Gladys were married June 21, 1954, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Gladys died September 23, 2003. Melvin owned and operated Mel’s 66 Service on ‘A’ Avenue West in Oskaloosa, for 15 years. On January 13, 1964, Melvin and Gladys welcomed their only child Tammy Lynne into their home. Mel’s last business venture began on December 6, 1969, when he started Mel’s Commercial Sanitation, the business’ motto, a clear sign of Mel’s wit, was “Our Business is Picking Up”. On January 2, 1987, Mel sold the business and retired, due to health concerns. Mel was proud of his bowling team he sponsored for 14 years while he owned the service station. They were quite good, participating in the state tournament for many years, and one year they even participated in the ABC National Tournament when it was held in Des Moines. He also loved to play golf, he started playing when Parkview Golf Course was built, now known as Edmundson Golf, a place Mel enjoyed playing up until 2007, when his health no longer allowed him to play. Besides watching and playing golf, Melvin was an avid football fan. His favorite teams to cheer for were the Steelers and the Bears. He also was a true lover of the Iowa Hawkeyes in both football and basketball. Melvin also loved chocolate he lived by the motto “If it isn’t chocolate, it isn’t dessert”. Melvin’s true delight in life were his two granddaughters Ashley and Madison. Mel loved to laugh. He always had a funny joke or story to tell everyone. He never knew a stranger, and his smile and laughter will be truly missed.
His family includes his daughter Tammy McGee of Des Moines; two granddaughters: Ashley and Madison McGee both of Des Moines, and several cousins, nieces and nephews around the country.
Besides his wife, Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; his son in law: Ron McGee, Jr.; and a sister: DeLighte Howells McCurdy.
Funeral services for Melvin Howells will be held Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Doug Smiley officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Tuesday morning after 10 and the family will be at the funeral chapel Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Marie Crumly Oskaloosa. Pearl “Marie” Crumly, 66, of Oskaloosa died Saturday, January 9, 2010, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. She was born June 11, 1943, the daughter of Ellis and Marie Wilhelme McCormick at Muscatine, Iowa. She graduated from Muscatine High School with the class of 1962. Following high school she completed beauty school at Davenport, Iowa. On June 4, 1972, she was united in marriage to John Crumly at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. After moving to Oskaloosa in 1972 she worked at C`est Vous Salon in the Mahaska Motel. Family always came first for Marie she always scheduled her days around her family’s activities. Marie worked at Fonda’s Beauty Salon for several years; she also did hair at Tower Park Care Facility. She retired from doing hair in 2003. Marie was a very active member of several organizations including: Central United Methodist Church, Oskaloosa Girls Inc., Beta Sigma Phi, Daughters of the Nile, and Eastern Star. She was president of Band Boosters a year they had a trip to Washington, D.C. and new uniforms were purchased She took great pride in being a “go to” person in these organizations. The Shrine was a large part of Marie and John’s lives; she enjoyed volunteering and entertaining for many Shrine events. She enjoyed visiting other parts of the country; she loved the destination, far more than the journey. She also enjoyed cheering for the Iowa State Cyclones with John, and doing crafts, especially scrap booking and making greeting cards. Though being very involved in various activities, Marie’s family was her delight.
Her family includes her husband, John Crumly of Oskaloosa, two daughters and their husbands: Emily and Juan Garcia and Tori and Chris Conant all of Humble, Texas; three grandchildren: Kennedy Garcia, Isabella and Arianna Conant; a sister and her husband: Sharon and Elmer Millage of Muscatine; a brother: Harold McCormick of Muscatine; and her parents in law: Lloyd and Mary Crumly of Milam, Texas.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents.

Donald Dunkailo Oskaloosa. Donald Dunkailo, 61, of Oskaloosa, died at the University of Iowa Hospital on Thursday, January 7, 2010. He was born on August 14, 1948, the son of Walter and Irene Mazurick Dunkailo in Syracuse, New York. Don moved from New York to Knoxville in the mid 1980’s were he owned a construction business doing construction, electrical, heating, and plumbing work. He especially enjoyed doing construction work for Ken Seeman. On December 5, 2009 he was united in marriage to Wilma George in Oskaloosa. Don enjoyed fishing, bowling, softball, woodworking; he was an avid Chicago Cubs, Denver Broncos and NASCAR fan, and especially delighted in helping people. He was a former member of the Knoxville V.F.W. and the Eagles.
Don is survived by his wife. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Donald R. Moore Oskaloosa. Donald R. Moore, 60 of Oskaloosa, died at his home on January 1, 2010. He was born August 16, 1949, at Oskaloosa, the son of John and Sarah Fisher Moore. He graduated from Fremont High School with the class of 1967. In 1969 Don joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Virginia. Following his discharge from the navy in 1972 he moved to Gainesville, Florida. Don was an operating room technician at the Plaza Surgery Center for many years. He took a leave of absence when he moved to Oskaloosa to care for his mom. Don loved music and crossword puzzles; delighted in friends and family, and was an avid Florida Gators fan. He was a member of the Cedar United Methodist Church and the American Legion.
His family includes his mother Sarah Prather of Oskaloosa; a daughter: Jennifer Moore of Las Vegas, Nevada; a son: Dustin Moore of Knoxville, Iowa; 2 brothers: Dave Moore of Halstead, Kansas and Dan (& Joyce) Moore of Jacksonville, Florida; a niece and nephew: Jake Mayworth and Laura Mayworth both of Jacksonville, Florida.
Don was preceded in death by his father: John Moore; his step father: Ralph Prather; and an infant brother: Darrell.
A private interment will be held at the Westview Cemetery at Kirkville, Iowa. No further services or visitation are planned.

Merle Dykstra Bussey. Merle E. Dykstra, 85, of rural Bussey, died Thursday, December 31, 2009, at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella. He was born on May 20, 1924 at Oskaloosa, the son of Nick and Minnie Walraven Dykstra. Merle attended country school at Madison Center northwest of Oskaloosa. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during World War II. In 1949 the Dykstra family bought the Fred Visser farm near Bussey and moved there and farmed. Early on, Merle farmed with his family and worked construction at the Eddyville Light Plant. Merle purchased the Otto Hayes farm near Bussey in 1958. He also drove a school bus for 40 years for the Bussey School District, and later Twin Cedars Community Schools. He retired from farming in 1986 and bus driving in 1990. He was baptized at the Central Reformed Church and a member of the American Legion. Merle enjoyed antiques, especially Parrish and Fox prints and cast iron banks. He also enjoyed going to coffee with friends, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
His family includes a sister: Esther Stainbrook Kempenaar of Oskaloosa; and three brothers: Virgil Dykstra at Maple Ridge in Oskaloosa, Marion (& Ruth) Dykstra, and Vern Dykstra all of Bussey; seven nieces and nephews; several cousins, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Berniece; a sister-in-law: Kathleen Dykstra; and brothers-in-law: Carl Stainbrook, and William Kempenaar.

Richard McCulley Oskaloosa. Richard W. “Dick” McCulley, 67, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at his home in Oskaloosa. He was born September 9, 1942 at Davenport, the son of Marvin and Gesina Brau McCulley. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1960, and following high school he served in the U. S. Air Force until 1964. After his military discharge, he returned to Oskaloosa and worked at the Oskaloosa Fire Department for four years. On November 28, 1969, Dick was united in marriage to Patricia G. Newport at Oskaloosa. From 1969 to 1973, he worked for the Oskaloosa Community Schools, and 1973 until retiring in January, 2008, Dick worked at the Oskaloosa Water Dept. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Oskaloosa, the American Legion, and the Elks. Dick enjoyed fishing, playing cards, reading, working on the computer, watching NASCAR, and traveling. His passion in life was a love of family.
His family includes his wife of 40 years, Pat McCulley of Oskaloosa; a brother and his wife: Donnovan and Tess McCulley of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, three sisters: Sylvia McClune of Montezuma, Lynda (& Larry) Ambrose of Oxford, Iowa, and Sandi (& Steve) Mueller of Reynolds, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Gloria (& Terry) Daywitt of Cedar Rapids; and 12 nieces and nephews.

Laurence Moore, Jr. Indianola. Laurence “Junior” Moore, 79, of rural Indianola and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Monday morning, December 28, 2009, at his home near Indianola. He was born June 13, 1930 at Voorhees, Iowa, near Waterloo, the son of Laurence and Josie Havens Moore. On January 9, 1953, he was united in marriage to Ellen Musgrove at Austin, Minnesota, and Ellen died March 26, 1993. He worked and drove truck for Binns and Stevens in Oskaloosa for 31 years, and retired in December, 1993. He enjoyed watching television and collecting toy trucks, and loved weekly family gatherings on Sunday.
Junior\'s family includes his son, James L. Moore of Oskaloosa; a daughter and her husband, Debbie and Scott Messamaker of rural Indianola; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a great great granddaughter; a brother and his wife, Roy and Dorothy Moore of Fremont; and a sister: Alma Andrews of New Sharon.
Besides his wife, Junior was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Penny Moore; a grandson: Jason E. Lanphier; and a great great grand- daughter: Sierra Nicole Latcham-Burk.

Louise Molyneux Boender Oskaloosa. Louise Molyneux Boender, 75, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday night, December 23, 2009, at Northern Mahaska Nursing & Rehab Center in Oskaloosa. She was born December 10, 1934, in the Indianapolis neighborhood of Mahaska County, Iowa, the daughter of Louie and Rosetta Lillard Holub. On September 22, 1951, Louise was united in marriage to (William) Kenneth Molyneux at Oskaloosa, and he died November 18, 1989. She was a homemaker and farm wife and helped on the family farm. She enjoyed riding motorcycles with Kenny. In 1983, they moved off the farm and into Oskaloosa. After moving into town, she enjoyed volunteering, often for First Christian Church and Mahaska Hospice. She delighted in her grandchildren, and enjoyed coffeetime with friends. On November 16, 1991, she was married to Lyle Boender at Oskaloosa. She was a member of Indianapolis Women’s Club; First Christian Church, Oskaloosa, and active in Ruth’s Circle at the church; Friendship Circle of King’s Daughters and Sons; an active member of Mahaska Hospice Auxiliary; and a former board member of the Indianapolis Cemetery Association.

Oren James Oskaloosa. Oren L. James, 100, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday morning, December 23, 2009, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa. He was born April 3, 1909 near Rose Hill, the son of William I. and Mary Jane Lisk James. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1928. In 1928, he began working at the old A & P Grocery store in Oskaloosa and worked there for 20 years. On September 5, 1937, Oren was united in marriage to Bernice “Bee” Barr at Lancaster, Missouri, and Bee died August 18, 2003. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. On January 1, 1949, Oren went into partnership with Raymond Allison in the old Dean’s Cigar and News store in Oskaloosa for another 20 years. He then was a Real Estate agent in Oskaloosa for 20 years, first with Cliff McCurdy, and later Phyllis McMains. He enjoyed collecting buckeyes, and giving them out to family and friends for good luck. Oren was a member of Tri-Luminar Lodge A.F. & A.M., the American Legion, Elks, Eagles, and a past board member of Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa.
His family includes a special friend, Mabel Ellison of Oskaloosa; a sister in law: Barbara Barr in Arizona; nieces and nephews: Denise and Alan Rabenold, Judy and Lyle Roorda, Mike and Debra Phillips, all of Montezuma, Mark and Linnell Phillips of Tiffin, Candy Quarton and Cindy and Dennis Bastron, all in Arizona, Daws “Sandy” and Gretchen Barr in Texas, and Wendy and Brad Williams in California; and several cousins including David and Marilyn Phillips of Oskaloosa.

Jean Hunt Oskaloosa. Norma Jean Hunt, 80, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, December 20, 2009, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born July 19, 1929, at Oskaloosa, the daughter of Jim and Olive McVay Myers. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1948. On June 5, 1948, Jean was united in marriage to George Keith Hunt at Oskaloosa. Following their marriage Jean stayed at home to help Keith with the farm and raise her family. She enjoyed crocheting, mowing the lawn; traveling to Branson; and camping, especially at the Iowa State Fair with Keith for 25 years. Jean was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Oskaloosa, and the Mahaska County Cattleman Association.
Her family includes her husband of over 61 years, Keith Hunt of Oskaloosa; a daughter and her husband: Judy and Tom Stone of University Park; a son and his wife: George and Sheila Hunt of North English; five grandchildren: Kelli (& Chris) Smith, A.J. (& Marie) Stone, Melissa Hunt, Kristin Hunt, and Devin (& Holly) Hunt; three great grandchildren: Aimee Smith, Justin Smith, and Connor Stone; a sister: Ruth Walker of What Cheer; a brother-in-law: Kenneth Hunt of Lacey; and a sister-in-law: Betty Madson of Montezuma.

Penny S. Woods Oskaloosa. Penny S. Woods, 51, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, December 10, 2009, at her home in Oskaloosa. She was born December 21, 1957 at Iowa City, the daughter of Grover and Virginia Kisor Woods. She was a graduate of Oskaloosa High School, and was a homemaker. She had worked at the old Happy Joe’s in Oskaloosa, and lastly worked at Pizza Ranch for a time. Penny enjoyed garage sales; sewing, racing, spending time with her family and attending family get togethers.

Linda Raines Oskaloosa. Linda Raines, 60, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, December 13, 2009, at her home in Oskaloosa. She was born July 27, 1949 at Oskaloosa, the daughter of Joann Sweeney, and was raised by her grandparents, George and Helen Fox, and later by Blanch and Ed Kanselaar. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1967. Linda worked at Rolscreen Company (now Pella Corp) for over 20 years; and later with Brian Booy Construction for many years. Lastly, she was a waitress at Judy’s Market Street Café in Oskaloosa for many years. She enjoyed playing cards, especially pitch and poker; bingo; cribbage; watching NASCAR and demolition car races; and going to the casino’s. She was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. auxiliaries, and the Lady Eagles.
Her family includes a son, Troy Raines of Oskaloosa; three brothers: William (Buddy) Fox, Sr. and Richard (& Pat) Fox and Jerry Fox, all of Oskaloosa; and two sisters: Pat Beadle of Oskaloosa and Inez Long of Pella; Blanch Kanselaar who helped raise her, of Oskaloosa; special family members, Corey Stout and Lance Fox; and her dog, Maggie.
Linda was preceded in death by her mother; her grandparents, George and Helen Fox and Ed Kanselaar, all of whom helped raise her; and several brothers and sisters.
Funeral services for Linda Raines will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, with Pastor Jeff Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Tuesday after 11 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Tuesday from 5 -- 7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Harold Martin Pella. Harold Patrick Martin, 66, of Pella died Saturday, December 12, 2009, while being cared for by Hospice at his home near Pella. He was born January 15, 1943, at Oskaloosa the son of John P. and Edith E. Knight Martin. Early in his adult life he worked at the saw mill in Eddyville. On September 2, 1963, he was united in marriage to Roberta Johnson at Oskaloosa. He stared working at Rolscreen (now Pella Corp.) in 1967, and he retired from there in February of 1997, after 30 years of service. Early in life he enjoyed playing pool. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR, and professional and college football. He loved to mow his lawn, and the family cabin lawn by the river. He also enjoyed fishing, boating, and riding and driving his Trans-Am. He enjoyed listening to country music.
His family includes his wife of over 46 years, Roberta Martin of Pella, his son and his wife: Eric and Toni Martin of Pella; two granddaughters: Jennifer Van Wyk and Jodi (& John) Hartman; five great grandchildren; one brother; and three sisters.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; a grand daughter: Jackie Martin; and a brother.
Graveside memorial service and burial will be held Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. in the Black Oak Cemetery near Pella, with Reverend Steve Stroupe officiating. As was Harold’s wish his body has been cremated and no visitation is planned. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Mahaska Hospice.

Donald Gallop Oskaloosa. Donald R. Gallop, 70, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born June 25, 1939 at Columbia, Missouri, the son of Ewen and Frances Sanders Gallup. On October 15, 1960, he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Mitchell at Oskaloosa, and she died February 9, 2006. A graduate of the school of hard knocks, he worked at PAMCO and later Hagan Manufacturing in Oskaloosa for several years. In 1972, he began work at Vermeer Manufacturing in Pella, and retired in 1999, and had been recognized with awards and plaques for his dedicated service to the company. In retirement, he cared for his ailing wife. He enjoyed fishing and hunting; bowling, and playing cards, especially poker and canasta.
His family includes three daughters and their husbands: Kathy and Perry Anderson and Debbie and Denny Carmer, all of Oskaloosa, and Evelyn and Dave Klampe of Urbandale; a son and his wife, Edward “Sonny” (& Janis) McGinity of Alvin, Texas; nine grandchildren: Kelli (Jason) Steil, Wendi (Brian) Meinders, Michelle (Tim) Plate, Brian Carmer, Michael (Christi) Sille, Ryan Sille, and Michael, Bessie, and Aimee McGinity; 24 great grandchildren; a special friend, Pam Jennings and her family; a sister: Joann Wise of Missouri; and two brothers, Jerry (& Lenore) Gallup of Oklahoma and Charles (& Evelyn) Gallup of Missouri; four sisters-in-law: Marcia Conley and Pat Mitchell, both of Oskaloosa; Karen Mitchell of Eddyville, and Louise Gallup in Missouri; a goddaughter, Courtney (Colton) Ferree, and many other nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, Don was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Pauline; and two brothers: Kenneth and Jum Gallup.
Funeral services for Don Gallop will be held Monday, December 14, 2009, at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with the Reverend Bill Tvedt officiating, assisted by the Reverend Floyd Cooper. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin on Sunday after 11 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Sunday from 1 -- 3 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Kenneth Harding Oskaloosa. Kenneth E. Harding, 70, of Oskaloosa, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 3, 2009, while being cared for at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born March 29, 1939 at Oskaloosa, the son of Lawrence F. and Adrianna Scholtus Harding. He graduated from the Eddyville High School with the class of 1957. Later, he attended Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. On September 30, 1959, he was married to Carol Stainbrook at Oskaloosa, and later divorced. He was an over the road truck driver for many years before retiring, and drove over one and a half million accident free miles. On November 21, 1990, he was united in marriage to Janice Springer in Oskaloosa. He loved to cook for big groups and also enjoyed fishing. He enjoyed volunteer work, especially the Children’s Miracle Network, and most recently, the new Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He volunteered as a cook for a year at an Indian Bible College in South Dakota and spent six summers in Oklahoma as a cook at an Indian Bible camp. In 1993, he volunteered in the flood relief at Eddyville. As years went by and his health declined, his volunteer work became more limited, but for the past 14 years, he was Santa Claus at the local Wal-Mart store. Kenneth was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Oskaloosa. He was deeply loved by family and friends.
Kenneth\'s family includes his wife, Janice Harding of Oskaloosa; a stepdaughter: Corena (& John) Barber of Coos Bay, Oregon; two stepsons: Burton (& Roberta) Franklin and John Franklin, all of Des Moines; four step grandchildren: Gregory and Cariane Barber, and Allie and Jerry Zebell; a brother: Robert Harding of Melcher-Dallas; his mother-in-law: Esther Kempenaar of Beacon; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harold Harding.
Funeral services for Kenneth Harding will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the First Assembly of God Church in Oskaloosa with the Reverend Michael Dotson officiating. Burial will be in the White Oak Cemetery east of Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Monday after 11 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Monday from 5 – 7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Leland Newport Lacey. Leland C. Newport, 82, of Lacey, died Sunday, November 29, 2009, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born October 21, 1927 in Mahaska County, the son of Charles and Ruby McDonough Newport. At age 17, Leland enlisted in the United States Navy, and served on the USS Alabama. Upon his discharge, he returned to Mahaska County. On February 9, 1947, he was united in marriage to Modell Thatcher in Lancaster, Missouri. He worked at Oskaloosa service stations, first the old Mattix Cities Service and later Mayers Standard. He then worked in the maintenance department at the Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa for 27 years, retiring in 1988. He enjoyed gardening; camping along the river; fishing; bow hunting; feeding domesticated and wild animals; and delighted in family and their activities, and his many friends especially his Navy buddy, Marvin and Anita Dreager of Webster City.
His family includes his wife of over 62 years, Modell Newport of Lacey; a son and his wife, Jack and Julie Newport of Lacey; three grandsons: Charles, Wayne (& Amanda Kendall), and Keith (& Jana) Newport; three great grandchildren: Andrew, Gabriell, and Malachi Newport; and two step great grandchildren: Chad and Hunter Hernandez; a sister and her husband, Margie and Lawrence Gay of Geneseo, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.
Leland was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter in law: Maxine “Mickey” Newport; a brother and his wife, Vernon and Marie Newport; and a sister and her husband, B. Averine and Charles Keylor.
Graveside services and burial will be Tuesday, December 1, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. in the Forest Cemetery with the Reverend David Pinkerton officiating. Visitation will begin at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Monday after 12 noon, and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Monday from 5 – 7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter or to Mahaska Hospice for the new Serenity Hospice House.
