Norma Fortney Oskaloosa. Norma Jean Fortney, 89, of Oskaloosa, died Friday, August 27, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She was born on August 21, 1921, in Mahaska County, the daughter of Forrest and Gladys Leanhart Hargrave. She graduated from the Lacey High School. Following High School she was united in marriage to Wes Hebron, they later divorced. On March 21, 1950, she was united in marriage to Robert Fortney at Oskaloosa. He died December 13, 2003. Norma stayed home to take care of her home and family for many years. Later in life she went to work as the site coordinator for Mahaska County Agency on Aging, in this capacity she oversaw the operation of the Oskaloosa Senior Center, meals on wheels and transportation services; she served in this capacity until her retirement in the early 1990’s. She enjoyed collecting antique chairs, Thursday night band concerts in the park, spending time with family and friends, and meeting new people. She delighted in going for rides in her convertible.
Norma is survived by her three sons: Larry Hebron of Corvallis, Oregon, Mike (& Tammie) Fortney of Oskaloosa and Craig Fortney of Moorehead, Minnesota; a son in law: Jerry Moeller of Hillsboro, Oregon; 10 grandchildren; several great and great great grandchildren; and a sister Alwilda Talley of Louisville, Kentucky.
In addition to her husband Robert, she was preceded in death by her two daughters: Aloni Joy Hebron and Janii Moeller, her parents and her step parents.
Funeral services for Norma Fortney will be held Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend John Allard officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Tuesday morning after 10 a.m. at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Tuesday evening from 5—7 to greet friends and relatives. Donald McCain Harvey. Donald Eugene McCain, 54, of Harvey died Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at his home near Harvey. He was born on January 31, 1956, in Oskaloosa the son of Eugene and Patricia Bartlow McCain. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1974. On October 17, 1975, he was united in marriage to Jean Breuklander at Lancaster, Missouri. To this union four children were born. Following school he went to work at Pella Corporation in Pella, he worked there for 31 years and retired from there in May of 2007. He also managed the drive-in theatre in Oskaloosa for many summers. He enjoyed participating in demolition derbies for several years. When he was no longer able to compete he helped his family with their demo cars. He also enjoyed being in the out of doors: hunting, fishing, and camping. He treasured the time he spent at his cabin by the Des Moines River, especially when his family was with him. He delighted in spending time with his grandchildren. He will be remembered as having a very generous, kind and helpful spirit.
His family includes his four children: Terry (& Fiancée, Heather Geer) McCain of Oskaloosa, Jeremy (& Crystal) McCain of Knoxville, Hollie (& Fiancée, Nathan White) McCain of Oskaloosa, and Jason (& Nikita) McCain of Rose Hill; 16 grandchildren: Hunter McCain, Spencer McCain, Skylar McCain, Tanya McCain, Treasure Spoon, Kristina McCain, Jeremiah McCain, Shadie McCain, Rebel McCain, Haylie Mathews, Laycie Mathews, Gaige McCain, Olivia McCain, Alijah McCain, Miley McCain, Hayden McCain; two brothers: Ronald (& Sheryl) McCain of Oskaloosa and Eugene (& Fiancée, Carrie Romick) McCain of Oskaloosa; 2 sisters: Sharon (& Randall) Sytsma of Eddyville and Connie (& Bill) Dykstra of Eddyville; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Harold Wells Oskaloosa. Harold Junior Wells, 77, of Oskaloosa died Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born on May 3, 1933, in Mahaska County the son of Harold Linsey and Elsie Lucille (Tolles) Wells. Following school he went to work for Ideal Manufacturing in Oskaloosa. In 1952, he entered the United States Air Force and served our country during the Korean War. In 1956 he was honorably discharged from the Air Force. On June 2, 1956 he was united in marriage to Nancy Dalzell at Traverse City, Michigan. They returned to Oskaloosa and Harold went back to work at Ideal Manufacturing until 1976. He then went to work at Vermeer Manufacturing in Pella; he retired from there in the late 1990’s after 23 years of service. He was a member of the Eagles and V.F.W. in Oskaloosa. He enjoyed being outside and especially enjoyed tending to his large garden. He delighted in being with his family. He regularly attended the Assembly of God Church in Oskaloosa.
He is survived by his four children and their spouses: Gary and Silvia Wells of Denver, Colorado, Laura and Pat Russell of Oskaloosa, Trevor and Julie Wells of Oskaloosa, and Michelle and Greg Patton of Oskaloosa; 18 grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter; and a special friend: Nancy Van Toorn of Oskaloosa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter: Nora Ann (Wells) Crawford; and two brothers: David and Willis Wells.

Alice M. Rogers Oskaloosa. Alice M. Rogers, 95, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, August 23, 2010, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born on August 5, 1915, in Mahaska County, the daughter of Fredde and Anna Maria Ver Kou Westercamp. In February of 1935 she moved to Oskaloosa and began working as a nurse’s aide at the old Dr. C.A. Abbott Hospital. On August 18, 1937, she was united in marriage to R. Emlen Rogers at Oskaloosa. Following their marriage they lived at Lacey for a time. In 1942, they moved to their farm near Kirkville. Alice was active in the operation of the farm. She also worked at Younkers of Iowa in Oskaloosa and Ottumwa for several years. Lastly she worked at Ross’s Ladies in Oskaloosa, retiring from there in 1972. In 1975 they retired from farming and moved into Oskaloosa. R. Emlen died March 8, 1985. While living in town Alice was active with many community activities. She joined the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa in 1940, was still a member, and active in Christian Women’s Fellowship. She was also a member of: Dr. Schuller’s Eagles Club, the 5:45 club, Mahaska Hospital Auxiliary, a life member of the Mahaska Historical Society and a past member of the Oskaloosa Women’s Club. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and tending to her flowers.
Her family includes her son and his wife, David and Jana Rogers of Prophetstown, Illinois; a grandson: Jason Rogers; two step granddaughters: Allison (& John) Vial and Emily Lang; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers: John, Brenus and Gerard Westercamp

Rachel C. Silvers Oskaloosa. Rachel C. Silvers, 94, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, August 19, 2010, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born April 3, 1916, at Alma, Arkansas, the daughter of Wylie and Virgie O. Plum Dickerson. On May 26, 1934, she was united in marriage to Everett Owen Silvers at Oskaloosa. Everett died September 25, 1983. Rachel worked at the old Continental Overall Factory and the former Big Smith; she retired from there after 25 years of service. She was a former member of the Moose Lodge in Oskaloosa. She enjoyed Bingo, Fishing and traveling. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially Pitch. She also looked forward to long car rides on Sunday afternoons.
Her family includes her three children: Joyce (& Wayne) McMullen of Oskaloosa, Jimmy (& Linda) Silvers of Oskaloosa and Ronald Silvers of Oskaloosa; a son in law: Clarence McKee of Oskaloosa; 11 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and 9 great great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter: Gail McKee; her parents; a grandchild; a great grandchild; six brothers: Clarence, twins Lloyd and Floyd, Raymond, Ralph and Wylie Dickerson Jr.; and two sisters: Catherine Bartlow and Ruby Newendorf.

(Leatrice) Becky Krusemark Oskaloosa. Leatrice R. “Becky” Krusemark, 85, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, August 16, 2010, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. She was born on November 15, 1924, in the Tioga Township of Mahaska County, the daughter of John Lewis and Lela Blanche Wymore Pearson. Following school she stayed home and helped with the farm work and helped care for her siblings. On October 26, 1941, she was united in marriage to Harold W. Krusemark at Lancaster, Missouri. Harold died October 25, 1991. Following their marriage they stayed on her parent’s farm to help with the farming operation. For a time she worked at the old Continental Overall Factory in Oskaloosa. They later decided she should stay home and help Harold on the farm; they farmed there together for over 40 years. They retired from farming and moved to Oskaloosa in 1990. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Rose Hill Ladies Group. She enjoyed watching television, reading, writing, and dancing.
Her family includes her four children, Sharon (& Lynn) Leazer of Lake of the Ozarks, Karen (& Paul) Six of Las Vegas, Danny (& Jill) Krusemark of Oskaloosa, and Vickie (& Danny) Kauffman of Rose Hill; 15 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; two sisters in law: Doris Pearson of Albia and Gerry Pearson of Cedar Rapids.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a sister: Ila Mae Pearson; and three brothers: Donald, Glenn, and Joseph “Gene” Pearson.
Graveside funeral services and burial will be held Saturday, August 21, 2010, at 10 a.m. in the Tioga Cemetery east of Rose Hill with Pastor Phil DeBoef officiating. For those wishing to go to the cemetery a procession will form at 9:10 a.m. at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. (Wilbur) LeRoy Roy McCartney Beacon. Wilbur LeRoy “Roy” McCartney, 83, of Beacon died Friday, August 13, 2010, surrounded by his loving family in Oskaloosa. He was born on Tuesday, September 21, 1926, in New Sharon, Iowa, the son of Willard Norman and Esther Fay Ruby McCartney. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1945. Following school he stayed on the family farm and helped farm for a time. On December 13, 1948, he was united in marriage to Donna Jean Russell at Oskaloosa, she died April 5, 2009. Roy and Donna stayed on the farm until moving to Pella in 1950. Roy worked at Schuring Garage in Pella where he became a very skilled mechanic. In 1958 they moved to an acreage in Beacon. On the acreage in Beacon he opened Roy’s Garage, he owned and operated that business for a time. He also served as the Marshall of Beacon. He then went to work at Kaiser Construction where he worked in several capacities including: heavy equipment operator, superintendent, and mechanic, he truly enjoyed the mechanic work. He retired from Kaisers in the early 1980’s. He and Donna owned and operated several restaurants in Oskaloosa including: Chief Mahaska, Howdy Folks, and Donna’s Corner Café, he helped in every capacity at the restaurants. They sold the restaurant in 1996, and enjoyed retirement by driving all over the United States together. They visited 47 of the 50 states, Roy loved to drive. He also enjoyed working with Donna in establishing the O.K. (Older Kids) Bunch at the First Assembly of God Church where he attended for several years. He also enjoyed going to gun shows and tinkering in his garage. He was a member of the NRA.
His family includes 3 daughters: Nancy McCartney of Pella, Marlene (& David) Bunnell of Oskaloosa, Debra McCartney (& Reggie Schmit) of Grand Island, Nebraska; 2 sons: Michael McCartney of Oskaloosa, Jeffrey McCartney (& Lori Beason) of Beacon; 6 grandchildren: Michael, Athena, Konstandina Ladeas, Mike Jr., Adam McCartney, and Elliot Schmit; two great grandchildren; a sister: Erma Lust of New Sharon; and a nephew: Jon Hanna of Beacon.
He was preceded in death by his wife Donna; his parents; a daughter: Janice E. McCartney and a grandson: Brian K. Roberts; and a sister: Betty Hanna.

Jackson Foster Oskaloosa. Jackson Merritt Foster passed away at home (in the last of the houses he built) on Thursday, August 12, 2010 of Alzheimers. As was his wish, his body has been donated to the University of Iowa Hospital, in Iowa City. A celebration of his Life will be held on Saturday August 21 from 2 to 4 at the Central United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Military Rites will be presented at 4 pm.
Jack was born October 9, 1927 in Mt Ayr, IA, to Hugh and Lena (Walter) Foster; he graduated from Mt Ayr High School with the Class of 1945 and enjoyed going back every five years for the class reunion. Jack entered the Army February 1946 and was stationed in Weiden, Germany, assigned to the Constabulary Unit. He was mustered out of the Army in May 1947. After the military, Jack went to work as a lineman, eventually working for Missouri Edison; and in May 1952 started to work for Iowa Power and Light, in Shenandoah. Jack married JoAnn Duben in November 1950, they had two sons, Stephen and Michael, they later divorced. The family moved to Oskaloosa in February 1962 as Jack was transferred with his job. Jack’s hobby was building and remodeling; He designed and built an octagon table, this led to an article being published in February 1964 in the Science and Mechanic Magazine. He designed and built 5 houses, and remodeled 6 others. His favorite part was building custom cabinets and woodwork. Jack married Theressa (Cappellin) Moulder in December 1979 in Oskaloosa; they went on a lot of road trips, to almost every state; and enjoyed a lot of football games. Jack retired from Iowa Power and Light in September 1985; this gave him more time to enjoy his hobby until Alzheimers made it impossible. He also enjoyed watching his sons’ and grandchildren’s sports and school activities; and of course his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes. When not building or remodeling, Jack enjoyed his other hobby of reading. He was a member of IBEW Local 499, the American Legion, and the V.F.W.
Left to mourn Jack is his beloved wife Theressa, son Steve (Rosanne) of Traer, IA/Rome, Italy; their children, Luke (Sarah) Foster and daughter MaryRose, Jill (Matt) Oliver, and Mark (Sarah) Foster. Son Mike (Ginny) of Oskaloosa, their children, Rebecca (Jay) Bock; Kristen (Chris) Fink; Michelle (Nate) Lahner; Daniel (Amanda) Foster and Timothy Foster. A stepdaughter Rhonda Moulder, her children, Nikki (Brian) Morris and daughter Shania; Andrea (Isaac) Wyant and children Elijah & Jewel; Steve Foley and children Jessie, Elizabeth, Jonah; and Alexis (Jordan) Gerrish. A stepson Tony Moulder, his children, Nick Moulder, Chris (Nicolle) Moulder and son Lukas; and Nicolle Mowrey. Stepson Dave (Mari) Moulder their children Corbin and Emily. Stepdaughter Sue Moulder, her daughter Michaela. Also, three nieces, four nephews and one cousin. Four step nieces and six step nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Charles Foster and sister Dorothy Loudon.

Berniece B. Jenkins Oskaloosa. Berniece Blondell Jenkins, 92, of Oskaloosa passed away from a heart attack at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa on August 7, 2010. She was born in Beacon, Iowa, on January 18, 1918, the daughter of Johannes Marius and Nelly Rus Kempenaar. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1936. Following high school she went to work for Dr. E.B. Wilcox, M.D. for four years. On October 2, 1938, she was united in marriage to E. Rex Jenkins, Rex died December 7, 2001. Following their marriage Berniece worked as a bookkeeper for her husband in Jenkins Plumbing and Jenkins Auto Sales. Both Berniece and Rex were active in their church home and with many community activities. They will be missed by many in the local area. Her grandchildren brought out, a very creative side of Berniece, one way she displayed her creativity was writing children’s books for them about a mouse named Archibald. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends.
Berniece is survived by a daughter and her husband Sally and Bill Morrow of Oskaloosa; and two sons and their wives: Carl R. and Alyce Jenkins of Cedar Falls, and John J. and Jan Jenkins of Flagler Beach, Florida; five grandchildren: Thomas Walter Jenkins, John Joseph Jenkins II, Robert Anthony Jenkins, Sherri Lynn Morrow, and Joseph Rex Harold Morrow; 8 great grandchildren

Norma Den Adel Ames. Norma Arlene Den Adel, 88, of Ames, Iowa, and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, August 5, 2010, at her son’s home in Nashville, Tennessee. She was born May 3, 1922, at Moberly, Missouri, the daughter of Carl Robert and Nina Leona Briscoe Watson. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1940. Following high school she went to work as a telephone operator for the telephone company. She also worked at the Oskaloosa Public Library for a time. On April 14, 1947, she was united in marriage to G. John Den Adel. He died December 22, 1964. She was a devoted homemaker who returned to work after the death of her husband, and worked nineteen years at the Wilcox Library at William Penn College, until her retirement from there in 1991. She enjoyed needlework, watching sports, and was an avid reader. Early on she was a very active member of the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa.
Her family includes her two sons and their wives: Randy and Diane Den Adel of Ames and Robert and Terry Den Adel of Nashville, Tennessee; six grandchildren: Justin Den Adel, Jamie Den Adel, Angela Den Adel Sacks, John Den Adel, Scott Den Adel, and Jennifer Den Adel; and three great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and a daughter Melodye Ann Den Adel.

Mitzi Louise Almond Grinnell. Mitzi Louise Almond, 49, of Grinnell and formerly of Oskaloosa, died at her home in Grinnell on Tuesday, July 27, 2010. She was born September 2, 1960, the daughter of Adrian Versendaal and Norma Scull in Grinnell. She graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1978. Following school she worked various jobs including C.O.C. and the Clow Foundry. On May 28, 1993 she was united in marriage to James Almond at Oskaloosa. She loved her family and friends and was like a mother to many people.
She is survived by her husband: James Almond of Oskaloosa; a daughter: Tisha (& Alex) Colbert of Topeka, Kansas; a son: Wesley Almond of Oskaloosa; a stepdaughter: Kim (& Rick) Thompson of Oskaloosa; a stepson: Travis (& Sara) Almond of Roland, Iowa; her father and stepmother; Adrian and Kathy Versendaal of Grinnell; 8 grandchildren; 5 brothers: Arie Joe (& Diane) Versendaal and Dexter (& Teresa) Versendaal both of Newton, Leroy Versendaal of Stanwood, Iowa, Andre (& Lori) Versendaal, Ricky (& Mandy) Versendaal of Arkansas; a sister: Judalon (& Don) Meacham of Barstow, California; 2 stepsister: Livian (& Ron) Shaffer of Fallbrook, California, Jaclyn (& Tim) Spencer of Trenton, Missouri; 2 stepbrothers: Joe Owen of Rose Hill and Jack Blair of Seattle, Washington; and several nieces and nephews.

James Brennon Oskaloosa. James E. Brennon, 79, of Oskaloosa died Sunday, July 25, 2010, at his home in Oskaloosa. He was born on July 22, 1931, to Mr. and Mrs. Mike Brennon, at Iowa City. He served his country in the United States Navy. Upon being discharged from the Navy he moved to Newton and went to work for Vernon Company. On June 8, 1957, he was untied in marriage to Joyce Hickman in Oskaloosa. Later he moved to Oskaloosa and went to work for Garden Engineering. He retired from Orkin Pest Control in 1994. He enjoyed trips to the casino. He was a member of the V.F.W.
His family includes his wife, Joyce Brennon of Oskaloosa; their five children: James Michael Brennon of Oskaloosa, Robert Dean Brennon of New Sharon, Carol Marie (& Brian) Brownrigg of Perry, Iowa, Kimberly Jane Brennon of Illinois, and Pamela Jean (& Jim) Konopka of Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son in law: Jeff Slagter.
As was James’ wish his body has been cremated and no services are planned. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert McLandsborough McAllen, Texas. Robert W. (Bob) McLandsborough, 86, of McAllen, Texas and formerly of New Sharon, died at the Comfort House in McAllen, Texas on July 23, 2010. He was born on April 1, 1924 in New Sharon, Iowa, the son of Andrew and Elsie McLandsborough. Bob graduated from high school in 1943. On January 14, 1944, he enlisted in the Navy Submarine Service and was discharged May 6, 1946. He served on the U.S.S. Becuna, and was also assigned to U.S. Sub Division 262, which was a maintenance division. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation medal. On June 30, 1948, he married Marilyn Davenport. In 1953 he went to work in Washington State at the Hanford Nuclear plant and later moved to Piqua, Ohio, where a Nuclear Plant was being built. From Piqua they moved to Omaha, Nebraska, and he worked as an operator then switched to the environmental studies group. Over the years they were able to travel to many states and see a lot of the country. In 1994, they visited Mission, Texas. They decided they wanted to move to Texas so they came back and bought a mobile home in a park. Bob enjoyed wood carving after he retired and taught this for a few years and was a member of a wood turners group. He also enjoyed golfing, so with these hobbies combined with all the park activities, he was able to keep quite busy.
He will be greatly missed by Marilyn, his loving wife of 62 years and his children Cynthia Thomas of Houston, Texas; Michael McLandsborough and his wife Sheila of Covington, Ohio; Grandson Robert Thomas and his wife Sunita of Dallas, Texas; Granddaughters Ami Lynn and Shannon McLandsborough, Kristin Price and her husband Jason also three great grandchildren, Bailey, Michael and Jacob, all from Ohio. Bob is also survived by two sisters, Mae Simpson of Reno, Nevada and Ann Johnson of Oskaloosa, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister: Betty Davis, and a brother Jerry McLandsborough.

Marion Scholtus Fremont. Marion Scholtus, 82, of Fremont, died Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Society in Ottumwa. He was born on February 19, 1928, in Marion County the son of Aart and Carri Harmon Scholtus. His family moved to a farm near Rose Hill when he was a year old. He attended school at the White Oak Country School. Following school he went to work farming with his family. He also worked for a time, constructing buildings for Garden Engineering. In 1950 he and his brother Martin took over the operation of the family farm. On September 30, 1966, he was united in marriage to Carol Stainbrook in Oskaloosa, that day; the Scholtus family grew by not one; but by five as Marion welcomed Carol’s four young children into his life. In 1968 Marion began operating the family farm on his own. He also hauled livestock with his straight truck for several years. Marion had a strong nurturing spirit for children, he believed in taking children in and teaching them the value of hard work and discipline. He enjoyed coon hunting, fishing, and hunting mushrooms. His family and his farm were his passions.
His family includes his wife of over 43 years, Carol Scholtus; their children: Glenn (& Deseiri) Scholtus of Fremont, Renee (& Al) Ault of Oskaloosa, Allan “Sam” Scholtus of Fremont, Robin (& Randy) Hook of Oskaloosa, Marion “Dean” (& Gina) Scholtus of Fremont, and David (& Tammy) Scholtus of Oskaloosa; 21 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; his mother in law: Esther Kempenaar of Oskaloosa; two brothers: Martin (& Kathy) Scholtus of Rose Hill, and Donald (& Jean) Scholtus of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.
Marion was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters: Joahanna VanPolen, Adriana Harding, Arlene Jenkins, Irene Lane, and Cari Hoyt; and two brothers: Art and Garrit Scholtus.

Kinsley Grace Burress Oskaloosa. Kinsley Grace Burress the infant daughter of Jesse and Monica Griffin Burress was born at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, and has gone to Heaven. She weighed 4 pounds 11.6 ounces and was 14 ½ inches long.
Kinsley is survived by her parents; a brother: Andrew age 15; two sisters: Kennedy age 11 and Ireland age 5 all of Oskaloosa; her maternal grandparents: Steve and Judy Griffin of Albia; her paternal grandparents: Robert and Paula Burress of Bloomfield; and her great grandparents: Arlene Gilbert and Marie Griffin both of Albia, Bonnie Burress of Floris and Paul and Mable Overturf of Drakesville.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 26, 2010 at the First Church of the Nazarene in Oskaloosa. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Russell L. “Rusty” Stout, Jr. Osklaoosa. Russell L. Stout, Jr., 60, of Oskaloosa died, Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at his home in Oskaloosa. He was born December 21, 1949, at Oskaloosa, the son of Russell L. and Shirley R. Benke Stout. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1968. He furthered his education at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, graduating from there in 1972. He started his teaching career at Greatbridge High School in Virginia and was there for 6 years. He moved back to Oskaloosa in 1980 and started teaching for the Oskaloosa School District. On June 15, 1990, he was united in marriage to Mary Recktenwald at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa. Rusty was very involved in Oskaloosa Community Theatre, he was a very talented actor and had parts in over 150 plays; he also served as director for countless productions. His passion was so deep for O.C.T. that in 1996 he and Mary purchased Stout’s Aisles of Paradise and provided a home for many O.C.T. plays. His final performance was in “Hurry Up and Wait” in May of 2010. Mary cultivated a love for antiques in Rusty; they scoured the countryside as Stout’s Antiques finding treasures for re-sale in their antique stores. His yard was a showcase for his love of landscaping and gardening. He was very proud that the Master Gardeners toured his garden and donated many starts for their fundraisers. Rusty retired from teaching in 2006, and stayed busy with his many aforementioned hobbies. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa. He was a charter member of the Sons of the American Legion, very active with the Republican Party. He was also active in the ISEA and the NEA where he served as a delegate for several years. He enjoyed traveling all over the world. He gave generously of his time and talents by serving as the bookkeeper for the textiles department of the Southern Iowa Fair, and preparing the war memorial at Forest Cemetery for Memorial Day for several years, among several other volunteer activities. Rusty also had a lifelong love of animals.
His family includes his wife Mary Stout of Oskaloosa; his mother: Shirley Stout of Oskaloosa; his daughter: Mary Jennifer Whitlatch (& Mike Harwood) of Oskaloosa two grandchildren: Lisa and Skylar; a brother: Jay (& Sharon) Stout of Lansdale, Pennsylvania; three sisters: Cheryl (& Bucky) Ward of Louisana, Missouri, Roxanne Stout and Rochelle Stout both of Oskaloosa; niece and nephews: Cary and Brittany Bethune and Ryan and Caleb Stout.
Rusty was preceded in death by his father; and a nephew: Jeremy Bethune.

Maxada Lieurance University Park. Maxada Lieurance, 90, of University Park died on Monday, July 19, 2010, at her home. She was born on March 8, 1920, at Garwin, Iowa the daughter of Harvey and Orpha Oaks Appelgate. Following school and during the depression she worked at Lynn’s Poultry in Oskaloosa. On December 31, 1938, she was united in marriage to Glen Lieurance at Lancaster, Missouri. Following their marriage she stayed home to care for her family and home; she also helped Glen on the farm. Glen died on June 16, 2001. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, camping, and traveling. She delighted in spending time with and watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren grow.
Her family includes her daughter and her husband, Renita and Dennis Kargol of Oskaloosa; two grandsons and their wives: Mark and Amber Kargol and Matt and Sarag Kargol; six great grandsons: Jacksen, Seth, Harrisen, Mitchell, Simon and Levi Kargol; a niece and her husband: Diana and Leroy Shadduck of Oskaloosa; and many other nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death four sisters: Valera Dobson, Lucille Harter, Irene Hotopp, and Mildred Dunwoody; and two brothers: George and Donald Appelgate.

Margaret Stought Kenosha, WI. (Helen) Margaret L. Stought, 91, of Kenosha, Wisconsin, and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Monday, July 19, 2010, in Kenosha. She was born Sunday, August 4, 1918, in Mahaska County, near Rose Hill, the daughter of Ernest J. and Hazel Simpkins Powers. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1937, she then attended a business secretarial school. On February 12, 1939, Margaret was united in marriage to N. Keith Stought at Lancaster, Missouri, and he died November 12, 2004. Early in their married life she worked for Burlington Trucking out of Oskaloosa. Later on she stayed at home to care for her family. She was a member of Women’s Club, the Newcomer’s Club and a member of Faith United Protestant Church in Park Forest, Illinois. She enjoyed all kinds of craft work, especially needlework, cooking, and flower gardening. She delighted in her family and viewed the time she spent with her grandchildren as a special treat.
Her family includes two sons and their wives: Michael and Janet Stought of Huntington Beach, California and Gregory and Jeanette Stought of Seattle, Washington; two daughters: Nancy and Edward Holland of Mesa, Arizona and Merrilee and Kenneth Follensbee of Kenosha, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three sisters: Marilyn Chambers of Bettendorf, Evelyn (& Richard) Stephen of Sioux City, Iowa, and Patricia (& William) Cleland of Oskaloosa.
Besides her husband; Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; a son: Richard Stought; two brothers: Ernest Carroll Powers and Kenneth Powers; and two sisters: Donna Cubit and Arlene Emmons.

James E. Sirovy Oskaloosa. James Edward Sirovy, 61, of Oskaloosa, died Friday, July 16, 2010, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born March 15, 1949, the son of George and Lorraine Luzadder Sirovy in Chicago, Illinois. He attended the Oskaloosa High School. Following school he enlisted in the United States Army and served 3 tours of duty in Vietnam, and was a recipient of a purple heart. Following his military service he went to work driving dump trucks in the Oskaloosa area. He then worked as an over-the-road truck driver for 25 years until his health no longer allowed him to truck. He then worked at Mike Brooks, Inc. in Knoxville for 3 years. Lastly, Jim worked at Bill and Ray’s Truck Repair in Oskaloosa, until his retirement in 2004, and enjoyed hanging out with the guys at the shop. He was a member of the D.A.V. and the American Legion in Oskaloosa. Jim loved attending the 501 86th reunions, being in the semi with Denny DeJong, and driving his grandkids around town.
His family includes his son: James Sirovy, Jr. (& Keely Miller) of Oskaloosa; his fiancé: Pat McCain of Oskaloosa; a granddaughter who he thought of as his own: Lisa (& Jerry) Beebe and their children Nicholas, Jason, and Zachary; a daughter Christine Kondoudis and her family; two grandsons: Bill Almond and his family and Christopher Edwards and his family; two granddaughters: Cara McMurry of Evans and Tabitha Edwards and her family; four brothers: George Sirovy and his wife Karla Wallace of Oskaloosa, Edward Sirovy of Oskaloosa, Charles Sirovy in Mississippi, Robert Sirovy of Fort Madison; and a sister Patricia Kirk of West Des Moines.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his step father; a sister: Darlene Wright; two brothers: Johnny and Ron Sirovy; and a grandson: Wayne Walker.

Vera Brostrom Oskaloosa. Vera Brostrom, 89, of Des Moines, and formerly of Oskaloosa, died at her daughter’s home in Des Moines. She was born February 21, 1921, near Bussey, the daughter of Jim and Alcie May Miller. She attended Iowa Central country school until she was 6 years old, and then attended Oskaloosa schools. She graduated as the class Salutatorian from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1939, and then attended the Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) in Cedar Falls, and William Penn College, Oskaloosa, and earned her teaching certificate. She taught at the Opposition, Star, and Pleasant Grove country schools in Mahaska County, and later University Park Elementary for 8 years. On November 6, 1943, Vera was united in marriage to Dexter D. Brostrom at Lancaster, Missouri, and Dexter died on February 29, 2000. Together they farmed in Harrison township of Mahaska County, and raised their family. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa for 50 years, and was a member of the Elizabeth circle and taught Sunday School for 35 years. Vera enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing.
Her family includes her son and his wife: Randy and Beth Brostrom of Oskaloosa; a daughter: Elaine Brostrom of Des Moines; three granddaughters: Cara Brostrom and her husband Christopher Okerberg, Renee and Haley Brostrom; a sister in law: Pauline Brostrom of Newton; and a nephew and his wife: Dennis and Tari Brostrom of Newton.
Besides her husband, Vera was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter: Sheri Lynn Brostrom; two sisters: Edith Allison and Catherine Slye; and a brother in law: Chester Brostrom.

Homer Johannes Montezuma. Homer Johannes, 98, of Montezuma and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Monday, July 12, 2010, at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born on July 1, 1912, at Barnes City, Iowa, the son of Leo and Luella Farr Johannes. On August 20, 1941, he was united in marriage to Glenna Bunting, she died June 26, 1991. He farmed near New Sharon until the mid 1950’s when they moved into Oskaloosa and he went to work for Montgomery Ward’s Tire Shop; he was also a part time projector operator at the old Rivola Theatre. After a few years of living and working in town, Homer went back to farming. In 1972 he retired from farming and moved back into Oskaloosa. In retirement he worked for several florists including: Greeve’s floral, Flower Village, and lastly Hy-Vee. Homer retired from delivering flowers in 2001. Homer will be remembered as a loving husband and a very caring person. He had a very dry sense of humor, and was well liked by those with whom he worked lived. He was voted Valentine King in 2005 and 2007, by the care takers at Montezuma Nursing and Rehab.
His family includes a brother and his wife, Dorman and Ruth Johannes of Cedar; a close niece and caregiver: Donna (& John) Nicholson of Oskaloosa; 2 close nephews: Scott (& Elizabeth DeBruin) Johannes of Cedar, and Jeff Nicholson of Oskaloosa, and Many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Homer was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Arthur, Cleo, and Ralph Johannes; and six sisters: Glema Damerval, Verna Pence, Donna Newell, Bernice Zimmerman, Letha Moore, and Marvel Jackson.

Carol I. Bates Oskaloosa. Carol Irene Bates, 59, of Oskaloosa died Sunday, July 11, 2010, at her home in Oskaloosa. She was born October 5, 1950, at LeMars, Iowa, the eldest of eight children born to Roman and Irene Plendl Ortmann. She was raised in Remsen, Iowa, and attended St. Mary’s schools and graduated from Remsen St. Mary’s High School in 1968. After high school, she worked at Farmers Savings Bank in Remsen until her marriage to Joseph F. Bates on June 15, 1973 in Remsen. They moved to Oskaloosa in July, 1973, and were associated with John Newman in the operation of the Newman Funeral Chapel. Following the death of John Newman in February, 1979, Carol worked side by side with her husband in the funeral business that is now known as Bates Funeral Chapel until this past May when their close friend and longtime associate Michael Sytsma took over operation of the business.
Carol unselfishly shared of her heart, and time, talents, and treasures in countless ways, often in a leadership role, with her church, our community, civic groups, and the funeral profession.
Her family includes her husband, Joe Bates of Oskaloosa; her mother: Irene Ortmann of Remsen; her brothers and sisters: Randy (& Connie) Ortmann, Terri (& Steve) Garvin, all of Remsen, Steve Ortmann (& Viv Oliver) of Manhattan, Kansas; Janet Ortmann, Sherri (& Terry) Truex, and Doug (& Nancy) Ortmann, all of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Mary (& Mark) Lubben of LeMars; many dear nieces and nephews; dear friends, the Ed and Dorothy Butler family, Bill and Linda Snakenberg family, the Tracy and Angie Gast family, and the staff at the funeral chapel. Dennis Hunt University Park. Dennis Jerald Hunt, 49, of University Park went to be with Jesus and his grandma Hattie on July 10, 2010. He was born on August 8, 1960, in Oskaloosa, the son of Donald Jerald and Shirley Ann Heil Hunt. He attended school in Oskaloosa. Following school he worked several jobs in factories and construction. He later moved to Arizona with his mother and managed apartments until moving back to Oskaloosa in 1990. In 1993 he was united in marriage to Katie Tressler and they later divorced. He loved dogs, especially Rottweilers, bowling, and being with his family.
His family includes: a daughter: Leah Cisse of Oskaloosa; 2 sons: Alex Hunt of Oskaloosa and D.J. of Massachusetts; three grandchildren: Jamar and Samba Cisse and Skylar Hunt; his mother: Shirley Ann Hunt of Oskaloosa; his father: Donald Jerald (& Denise) Hunt of Madrid, Iowa; his brother: Randy (& Jody Kirby) Hunt of Oskaloosa; his step brother: Jesse Hunt of Madrid; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents: Gail (& Thelma) Hunt; his maternal grandparents: Karl (& Hattie) Heil; and his close friend and mother of his children: Michelle Reilly.
As were his wishes his body has been cremated and a graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at Forest Cemetery at 10 am. A procession will be formed at 9:40 A.M at the funeral chapel. Memorials may be made to the Dennis Hunt Memorial Fund.

Harry Duane Kool St Paul. Harry Duane Kool, 54, of St. Paul, Minnesota, and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, July 4, 2010, at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He was born January 1, 1956, at Oskaloosa, Iowa the son of Harry C. and Sandra Allgood Kool. While in high school at Oskaloosa he was active in Track and theatre he participated in many plays including Camelot. He worked part time at Patterson Drug, and helped Mr. Rumor paint houses. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1974. He later earned his Masters in Education from the University of Minnesota. He was united in marriage to Debra Allerhand on February 13, 1993, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Duane taught at the alternative school in St. Paul, he truly enjoyed teaching skilled trades to troubled kids. He had a knack for learning and teaching carpentry and mechanics. He was a very gifted musician, he could teach himself to play any instrument very quickly, and he especially enjoyed playing the guitar. He worked from time to time with several famous musicians.
His family includes his wife, Debra Allerhand-Kool of St. Paul, Minnesota; two sons: Danny Kool and Levi Kool both at home; his parents: Harry C. and Sandra Kool of Oskaloosa; a sister and her husband: Pamela and Buster Albertson of Oskaloosa; and many aunts uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, and a nephew: Matthew Engelhoven.
As was his wish his body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date in St. Paul. Visitation will begin Friday morning after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel, and the family will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Friday from 5—7 to greet friends and relatives. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of local arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Oskaloosa Senior High Arts Department.

Henry “Hank” Slagter Oskaloosa. C. Henry “Hank” Slagter, 81, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born September 19, 1928 near Prairie City, the son of John and Anna Louwsma Slagter. Hank grew up east of Oskaloosa and on February 17, 1950 he was united in marriage to JoAnn Van Ommen at Oskaloosa. Together, they farmed in the Cedar-Oskaloosa area and Hank also was a mechanic working on auto’s and farm equipment. They retired in 1999, and moved into Oskaloosa. In his retirement years, he drove cars for Oskaloosa Motors and later Clemons Auto. He was a long time member of Central Reformed Church, and had been a member of the Dutchmasters Car Club. He enjoyed rebuilding cars and tractors, and going on tractor rides. He loved music, especially country music and going to concerts. He enjoyed going to breakfast with buddies at local restaurants.
His family includes his wife of over 60 years, JoAnn Slagter of Oskaloosa; two daughters and their husbands: Cindy and Jerry Holub of Johnston and Sheryl and Doug Tomlinson of Oskaloosa; a son: David Slagter of Fremont; seven grandchildren: Jason (Emily) Holub, Molly (Chad) Curtis, Matt (Betsy) Holub, Nathan Tomlinson, Marti (Scott) Stern, Katie Tomlinson, and Emily Slagter; a step grandson: Brandon (Chelsea) Hess; nine great grandchildren; a sister: Effie Sopher of Oskaloosa; two brothers and their wives: Melvin and Shirley Slagter of Zellwood, Florida and Don and Luetta Slagter of Pella; and three sisters in law: Laura Slagter of Des Moines, Nellie Slagter of Oskaloosa, and June Slagter of Pella; a brother in law and his wife: Dale and Joey Van Ommen of Oskaloosa; a sister in law and her husband: Judy and Jerry Den Adel of Otley; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters: Tressa Van Dusseldorp, Tena DeHaan, Margaret Street, and Nellie Meinders; and five brothers: Jacob, John Jr., Bill, George, and Marion Slagter; and a sibling in infancy.
Funeral services for Hank Slagter will be held Saturday, June 26, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa, with the Reverend Don DeGlopper officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa. There will be a Family Prayer Service Saturday at 10:15 a.m. in the fellowship hall of the church. Visitation will begin on Friday at the Bates Funeral Chapel after 11 a.m., and the family will be present Friday from 5 – 7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Mahaska Hospice.
